Tips for Better Dental Checkups
It's no secret that dental hygienists spend a lot of time looking in patients' mouths. But what exactly do they look for when you are sitting in their chair?
Plaque—A First Indicator
- Plaque is a sticky, colorless film of bacteria that develops when sugary or starchy foods are left on the surface of your teeth.
- Gingivitis and tooth decay can be caused by plaque buildup.
Gingivitis—Know the Signs
- Symptoms of gingivitis include gums that are soft, swollen, red and bleed easily during brushing and flossing.
- Brushing alone may not be enough to fend off gingivitis. Use a mouth rinse morning and night for added protection against plaque and gingivitis, and to help reach the areas where your toothbrush may have missed.
